Your EMS Experience Means Nothing

This week on the podcast Jim and Josh talk about a few EMS topics including active shooter training. The topic of having a degree in EMS, higher pay and the pie in the sky wishing of it all came up.

The idea that a college degree trumps your five, ten or more years of experience and how that is going to bring EMS from making $12, $13 or $14 dollars an hour to a pay scale matching the job we do with or without a degree is as always a hot topic.

Sure you won’t get rich in EMS and you shouldn’t expect too. But you should expect to pay your bills as much as you are expected to undergo continuous education, skills assessments, new equipment training, new drugs and protocols. All in the name of superior patient care and competent providers. But no so competent that we can tell people they don’t need an ambulance based on our assessments. Fair?

Heck EMT’s are being expected to perform 12 leads, give drugs, use advanced airways and that list is growing. Yet they have not earned a cent more an hour and most are making at or below minimum wage. Fair?

Spin the wheel as we go round again on this topic and take a listen below

What Is Fair Pay In EMS?

gungirl12The topic of EMS providers being able to demand higher pay is often seen in various blogs, forums and Facebook groups.

We have even discussed it here on the show several times and points of view about education, training, nursing etc. have all come up.

But what is that sweet spot? What is the “number’ that would be fair based on our training and education? Do you have one in your head that you think is fair?

Fueled by the recent JEMS report, this is lining up to be a great episode.

Getting Paid For What You Do In EMS

It’s a common complaint right? EMS doesn’t get paid enough. Arguments on education, training levels, license vs. certification. All trying to justify higher pay or why we don’t deserve it. Yet, where is the incentive if we don’t get paid just a little extra for some things we do now that seem to get lumped into our job descriptions. Listen to this discussion and share your experiences.
