Limiting Patient Choices During Call Overload

When people call 911 and then request transport to a specific hospital. Should EMS honor that request?

Or should we transport to the closest appropriate facility based on the patients signs, symptoms and our suspected clinical picture of the patient?

In NYC they have attempted to take away the choice of facility for a patient  due to the call volume and hospital overloading from COVID

Specifically when people are calling for non emergency reasons and just want
a trip to the ED for minor issues or are looking for a COVID test to be done.

This week on the show Jim and Dave talk about this policy and also discuss
how we can be prepared for MCI’s and being the Incident Commander when no one wants  the job.

Plus we answer a listener question about being a new paramedic and overcoming stress.

COVID and Beyond | Changes To EMS Protocols

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The stress on EMS agencies keeps growing. Especially in hot areas like NY and NJ.

Dr Ken Lavelle who is an Emergency Medicine Clinic Instructor and Medical Director for several agencies in NJ and PA, joins Jim on this episode to discuss changes he made to local EMS protocols to help mitigate response, treatment and transport of EMS calls with potential coronavirus symptoms.

We also discuss common struggles when putting new guidelines into play during something like a pandemic and the potential to take a broader look at these changes and others going forward after the pandemic is over.

Check out Dr Lavelle’s training website at Emergency Training here.

As EMS professionals continue to respond and show up to work each day during this pandemic. I wanted to create something that would recognize their professional sacrifice. Adding More EMS To COVID-19 Response

With the healthcare profession under siege from the COVID-19 pandemic, we need more professionals providing care now.

But what is the best way to get providers out into the workforce? The NREMT made an attempt to get new providers out there but maybe just too weak of an attempt.

Are there better ways? Jim and guests talk about ways they think EMT’s and paramedics can be of use during this crisis.

Everything from reactivating retried members to rehiring past employees and perhaps putting providers in non essential areas of ED’s or ambulance departments.
